St. John’s University is reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability ahead of Earth Day on April 22 through various green energy projects at its Queens, NY campus. The institution is incorporating solar panel technology in powering the recently established St. Vincent Health Sciences Center, which opened in September 2024, facilitating resources for students in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences' programs.

The University initially sought Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification to affirm its focus on energy efficiency. It is now aiming for LEED Gold certification to enhance the center's standing in environmentally responsible design.

Brian Baumer, Associate Vice President of Campus Facilities and Services, expressed that such initiatives highlight the University's dedication to environmental responsibility. He stated, “We recognize that sustainability is not just an environmental goal, but a moral imperative—one that ensures future generations, particularly those facing economic, physical, or social disadvantages, have access to a healthier and more sustainable world.”

Baumer also noted that developers are collaborating with St. John’s Facilities and Services to introduce electric vehicle charging stations on campus, marking a significant environmental and infrastructure milestone for the University.

Beyond St. Vincent Health Sciences Center, other campus buildings align with the New York City's Climate Mobilization Act, aiming to cut greenhouse gas emissions significantly by 2030. Notably, high-efficiency chillers have been installed to replace older chilling systems in various campus facilities.

The University's sustainable ethos extends to its student body, evidenced by eco-friendly service projects like maintaining an organic garden. This initiative, supported by the St. John's Green Team, originated to aid St. John's Bread & Life, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit.

McKenzie Crissman, a master's student in Environmental Sustainability, has actively engaged in these projects since May 2024. She finds personal and professional fulfillment in participating with the Green Team, which she describes as aligning with her aspirations in environmental protection and food sustainability. She noted, “It was incredible to find that the garden focused on exactly what I want to pursue in my career: environmental protection and food sustainability.”

The St. John’s Green Team has achieved “Silver” status from The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, recognizing its outstanding contributions to sustainable practices in higher education.
