Pope Francis recently addressed the challenge of migration during a gathering at the Mexico-U.S. border. Catholic bishops and pastoral workers from Mexico, the United States, and Canada came together in El Paso at the end of March. The event aimed to enhance regional collaboration and care for vulnerable migrants.

Attendees began with a Eucharist at Annunciation House, a refuge for migrants. The service took place on the feast of Saint Archbishop Oscar Romero, who is remembered for defending the poor. The event featured Wilson, a young migrant and survivor of the deadly Juarez immigration fire in March 2023, which resulted in 40 deaths. Though he suffers from severe injuries, Wilson remains hopeful and advocates for justice. His offering of worn sneakers and a blanket during the service moved many participants.

The gathering continued with a candlelight vigil near the border, where Wilson received a rosary blessed by Pope Francis. The next day, participants hiked into the desert to honor those who have perished seeking better lives.

Cardinal Fabio Baggio, from the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, spoke at the conference. He emphasized Pope Francis’s "art of encounter," highlighting the importance of deliberate engagement, especially with marginalized communities. Cardinal Baggio stressed that such engagements are intentional efforts to connect and build understanding among all people involved, underscoring the transformative power of these encounters.

Connection, bridge-building, and the growth of humanity were central themes throughout the event. Attendees were encouraged to continue their commitment to these principles, echoing the Pope's call for solidarity with those on society's fringes.
