Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President St. John's University-New York | St. John's University-New York
The School of Education at St. John’s University, in collaboration with the Diocese of Brooklyn, has introduced the Future Catholic School Teacher Scholarship. This program aims to cultivate educators dedicated to teaching within Catholic schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn. The scholarship will begin in fall 2025 and is specifically for undergraduate students who aspire to a teaching career in the Diocese.
Successful candidates will receive an award of $10,000, divided into $2,500 annually over a four-year period of undergraduate study. Recipients must agree to teach for at least four years in a Catholic school in the Diocese immediately after graduation.
Dean James Wolfinger emphasized, “It is vital that St. John’s and our School of Education have a strong partnership with New York City area Catholic schools.” He highlighted the resources provided by the program to attract excellent students to Catholic schools.
Dr. Katherine C. Aquino, Associate Dean for Innovation and Partnerships, noted the shared commitment to nurturing educators rooted in Catholic education values. She said, “By investing in the development of dedicated teachers, we are ensuring that students within the Diocese of Brooklyn receive the inspiration, guidance, and quality education they deserve.”
The scholarship can be combined with other financial aid opportunities, such as the Catholic Scholars Program, which offers $20,000 over four years and supports students’ leadership and faith-based activities.
Robert DiNardo, Director of the Institute for Catholic Schools, stated, "It is of the utmost importance that we, as a Catholic university, support the Diocese of Brooklyn by creating opportunities for our aspiring teachers to become Catholic educators.”
The Future Catholic School Teacher Scholarship represents the commitment of both St. John’s University and the Diocese of Brooklyn to fostering future educators who will enhance Catholic education for future generations.
