Ashley Bautista, a finance major, is poised to graduate from St. John’s University in May 2025. Reflecting on her time in academia, she regards her study abroad experiences as pivotal, particularly her participation in the Western Europe Semester (WES) program during Fall 2023.

Bautista had the opportunity to engage in the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholar Program during her semester in Western Europe, which aims to help students build a global network and showcase American diversity across the world.

Her journey began in Rome, Italy, where she enrolled in an International Business course with Professor Nicolo Tartaglia. "Professor Tartaglia constantly questioned my conclusions," Bautista shared, highlighting her academic growth in global business understanding and presentation skills. Outside class, she explored Italian cities and museums, enhancing her cultural experiences.

The next destination was Limerick, Ireland, where she embraced the local culture by learning about Irish history and music. Despite initial expectations, she found Limerick engaging. Bautista developed an affinity for hiking and made musician friends who keep her informed about Irish culture and politics. "I had an incredible time in Ireland," she stated, which inspired her to pursue further studies abroad.

In Paris, Bautista immersed herself in art, music, and history. She explored Paris's thrifting and art scenes, connecting with diverse individuals. During this period, the Gilman Scholarship Program facilitated her study tour in Belgium. It was here that she engaged with international political leaders and gained insights into EU sustainability policies. She had discussions with Cambridge researchers and EU policymakers, finding it an enriching experience.

Her interest in sustainable fashion and finance led her to Leeds Beckett University, UK, for further studies. Leeds's reputation as a finance hub and its vibrant student community attracted Bautista. There, she has been actively participating in various activities, including teaching English to immigrants as part of a practicum. "I am beyond grateful for the learning experiences I gained," Bautista expressed, recognizing the role of her previous program in nurturing her adaptability and cultural engagement.

As she progresses in her new academic chapter, Bautista acknowledges the St. John’s Office of International Education for their support. She remains thankful for the encouragement that enabled her dual program participation, and she looks forward to reuniting with family and friends in New York.
