Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D. Archbishop | Archdiocese of Newark website
Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, has issued a statement addressing past actions within the Archdiocese of Newark and Seton Hall University. The Cardinal emphasized his responsibility to lead by example for the local Church and the broader community in northern New Jersey.
Reflecting on past misconduct, Cardinal Tobin acknowledged that "the inexcusable actions and shameful behavior of Theodore McCarrick" have damaged trust among Catholics. Since assuming his role as Archbishop in 2017, he has focused on healing these wounds and restoring trust under Pope Francis's leadership.
As President of the Board of Regents and Chair of the Board of Trustees at Seton Hall University, Cardinal Tobin addressed concerns about internal reports related to Theodore McCarrick. These reports, investigated over five years ago by the Board of Regents, included references to Monsignor Joseph Reilly, appointed President of Seton Hall in 2024.
To address these issues comprehensively, Cardinal Tobin has engaged Ropes & Gray LLP for a third-party review. This review will assess previous investigations conducted by Latham & Watkins law firm concerning McCarrick and examine any other findings or responsive actions developed by Gibbons law firm and Attorney Joseph P. LaSala.
The review will focus on how findings relate to Monsignor Reilly and their communication within the Archdiocese and Seton Hall University. Ropes & Gray will receive full cooperation from both institutions with no set timetable or restrictions placed on their investigation.
Cardinal Tobin stated that "a transparent review of the facts will best serve the interests of all involved" as well as those calling for such an inquiry.
