Ellen Burti, an alumna of St. John’s University, has been appointed as the Assistant Vice President for Career Services at the university. Burti holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and a Master of Science degree in Adolescent Education from St. John’s. With over 30 years of experience in career development and higher education, she began her career at St. John’s in 1983 within the Department of Career Services.

Reflecting on her background, Burti shared, "I was born and raised in New York City, in the Rockaways, and I’m the youngest of three." Her decision to attend St. John’s was influenced by family ties to Catholic education and proximity to home.

Burti's initial interest lay in science and horses, leading her to explore various career paths before finding her niche in career services through a one-credit course during her undergraduate studies. "Toward the end of the semester...I was invited to the Career Center," she recounted about discovering her career path.

As Assistant Vice President for Career Services, Burti aims for full student engagement with career services at St. John’s. She emphasizes integrating career education into students’ academic lives through technology without disrupting classroom activities.

Burti noted challenges such as raising awareness about internships' importance alongside academics: "If two students are applying for a position...the 3.5 student is much better positioned to succeed."

The primary platform used by St. John's is Handshake, described by Burti as "a triangle between students, Career Services, and employers." Other tools include Big Interview for simulated interviews and Parker Dewey for micro-internships.

Burti advises students on gaining relevant experience tailored to their fields: “Get experience. Get an internship or some relevant experience.”

She highlights growth areas like healthcare and technology while emphasizing doing what one likes as key to success: "Those elements will lead you to success."

Though not advising as frequently now, Burti values guiding first-generation college students toward understanding their potential impact on the world: “Working with first-generation college students who may not know how to navigate the college-to-career process is extremely gratifying.”

In conclusion, she stresses early engagement with all students through various programs ensuring they feel supported throughout their academic journey.
