Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita

The Diocese of Wichita recently hosted a Quo Vadis vocational discernment retreat from December 27 to 29, marking its most attended event in over a decade. More than 60 young men participated, aiming to discern their potential callings within the priesthood. Fr. Garett Burns, the director of vocations promotion for the diocese, described the retreat as "very fruitful," noting that it was the largest turnout he had seen.

Fr. Ed Pelrine led the retreat, offering scripturally-based conferences and guiding participants through meditations to aid in prayer and vocational discernment. Fr. Burns shared his personal experience with Quo Vadis retreats, stating that even if participants leave without clarity on their calling, the experience can still be beneficial. He recounted how his own journey led him to apply for seminary shortly after attending a similar retreat.

The retreat featured several key activities designed to assist attendees in their discernment process. One such activity was the Emmaus walks, where participants paired with priests for one-on-one guidance throughout the Spiritual Life Center grounds. Fr. Burns emphasized these walks as "one of the most powerful parts of the retreat."

Another highlight was the Quo Vadis panels, which included both priest and seminarian panels where attendees could submit anonymous questions about seminary life and priesthood. The responses provided by those currently undergoing similar experiences were particularly impactful for participants.

A documentary screening about Fr. Emil Kapaun was also part of the program, showcasing inspiring examples of priestly life that could influence attendees' discernment journeys.

Fr. Burns encouraged young men considering future retreats not to be deterred by fear or doubt: “Be not afraid,” he advised, emphasizing that attending could provide clarity on one's vocation even if it confirms a path outside of priesthood.

He concluded by highlighting the sense of community fostered during these events: “It’s a great time of fraternity to see other men your age going through the same things.”
