St. John's University's G.L.O.B.E. program recently concluded with a visit to Vietnam, providing students an opportunity to observe the impact of their academic work in real-world settings. The Global Loan Opportunities for Budding Entrepreneurs (GLOBE) initiative is a collaboration between St. John’s The Peter J. Tobin College and the Daughters of Charity, focusing on global microfinancing.

Led by Professor Bill Reisel, GLOBE participants are involved in all aspects of the program, including evaluating loan applications, marketing, tracking funds, fundraising, and assessing success metrics. Selected "student fellows" travel as part of a delegation to witness firsthand the outcomes of their efforts.

This year’s delegation visited Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. Professor Reisel was accompanied by six students and Rev. Tri Duong from St. John’s University Campus Ministry. Father Tri's role as translator and cultural guide proved essential due to his Vietnamese background.

The group engaged with over a dozen entrepreneurs who benefited from microloans, including operators of businesses like a Bahn Mi sandwich shop and an organic farm. Students plan to document these experiences through the GLOBE Gazette publication and website.

Ariana Rolon, pursuing her Master’s degree in Marketing Intelligence at St. John's University, remarked on the significance of this immersive experience: “This trip lets the Fellows see what goes on beyond the classroom and in a more immersive experience.”

Professor Riesel emphasized that their mission extends beyond individual enterprises: “Our highest priority is to strengthen and build our relationship with the Daughters of Charity and support their work."

Founded in 2007 by Dr. Linda Sama, GLOBE has facilitated business development across various countries including Kenya, Nigeria, Vietnam among others under the guidance of St. John’s Office of International Education.
