Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita

Several keyboards have been replaced during the 36-year tenure of Christopher M. Riggs as editor of the Catholic Advance. Reflecting on his first day, Riggs recalls how Sr. Cecilia Bush, whom he succeeded in October 1988, reassured him with her prayers.

Riggs expressed gratitude for serving the Diocese of Wichita and assisting four bishops: Bishop Eugene J. Gerber, Bishop Thomas Olmsted, Bishop Michael Jackels, and the current bishop, Most Rev. Carl A. Kemme.

He described significant changes in the Catholic Advance over the years, from desktop publishing's early days to adopting digital photography and internet technology. Initially a weekly publication with articles retyped onto special paper, it transitioned to desktop publishing with Don McClane Jr.'s help.

The Catholic Advance was among the first Catholic newspapers to launch a website around 2003. Today, it offers a digitized version alongside other media formats under the Office of Communications.

Despite embracing new communication methods, Riggs emphasized that their goal remains supporting the bishop's mission to guide his flock spiritually. He expressed appreciation for colleagues and acquaintances who acknowledged his work.

As he retires, Riggs passes editorial duties to Del Torkelson while maintaining a minor role in updating diocesan history.
