The Diocese of Brooklyn has announced the passing of Reverend Monsignor John J. Gildea, a retired priest who served the community for many years. Bishop Robert J. Brennan shared the news, stating that Monsignor Gildea died on December 28, 2024. He was born on June 2, 1940, and ordained as a priest on May 28, 1966.
Monsignor Gildea dedicated his life to serving various parishes within the Diocese of Brooklyn. His roles included Parochial Vicar at Saint Bartholomew in Elmhurst and several other churches across Brooklyn. He also held positions as Pastor at numerous parishes including Our Lady of Mercy and Sacred Heart in Brooklyn. His service extended beyond New York to missionary work in Paraguay and the Dominican Republic.
In addition to his parish duties, Monsignor Gildea contributed to broader church activities as a member of both the Ecumenical and Interreligious Committee and the Seminary Admissions Board. In recognition of his service, he was named Chaplain of his Holiness in 2019.
Funeral arrangements have been set with a wake scheduled at Saint Bartholomew R.C. Church on January 6th from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM, followed by a vigil mass at 7:00 PM. The funeral mass will take place at Immaculate Conception Center on January 7th at 11:00 AM with burial at Saint John Cemetery in Middle Village.

Reverend Monsignor Steven J. Aguggia expressed prayers for "the repose of his soul" and comfort for family and friends during this time.
