Pope Francis has initiated the Jubilee 2025: Pilgrims of Hope by opening the holy door at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, signaling the beginning of a year dedicated to renewal and spiritual growth for Catholics worldwide. Cardinal Blase Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, will conduct an opening Mass to mark this occasion locally at Holy Name Cathedral on Sunday, Dec. 29 at 12:30 p.m., which will be available via livestream.

The jubilee year, spanning from Dec. 29, 2024, through Dec. 28, 2025, is intended as a period for Catholics to deepen their faith amidst global challenges such as wars, climate change, and the aftermath of the pandemic. Pope Francis expressed his hope that this holy year would embody “deep faith, lively hope and active charity.”

Cardinal Cupich emphasized the significance of this period as an opportunity for spiritual rebirth and unity among Catholics. He acknowledged local pastors who have designated their parishes as pilgrimage sites for those unable to travel to Rome.

Jubilee years are traditionally times of pilgrimage and acts of mercy rooted in Old Testament practices. They provide opportunities for Catholics to obtain plenary indulgences through prayer and participation in specific religious rites.

In Chicago, the archdiocese has identified 24 pilgrimage sites where believers can engage in prayer and other activities associated with obtaining a plenary indulgence. Unlike previous jubilees, only holy doors in Rome will be open during this jubilee year.

Pope Francis highlighted the theme "Pilgrims of Hope," urging a focus on universal brotherhood and addressing widespread poverty. He underscored the importance of listening to marginalized voices during this time leading up to the jubilee.
