Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita
Fr. Seth Arnold and Fr. Hayden Charles, both priests from the Diocese of Wichita, find a unique connection between their spiritual lives and their passion for distance running. They believe that the discipline required in running parallels the dedication needed for a fulfilling prayer life.
Fr. Arnold, chaplain at Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School in Wichita, stated, “There’s a reason that St. Paul said we should run so as to win the prize.” He emphasized that the consistency and effort in running contribute to spiritual growth. Similarly, Fr. Charles, chaplain of Bishop Carroll High School in Wichita, remarked on the accessibility of running: “It takes no special skills but does require your time.”
Fr. Charles began his journey into distance running during seminary when he was encouraged by a classmate to participate in a half-marathon. His experience with Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist during his studies at Mundelein Seminary further solidified his commitment to running marathons for charity.
Fr. Arnold's background in cross-country and track since middle school helped him integrate prayer into his runs. Inspired by Fr. Charles, he pursued marathon training and aimed for significant races like the Boston Marathon.
Both priests have participated in events such as Chicago Marathon and Wichita’s Prairie Fire Marathon. Fr. Charles qualified for the 2026 Boston Marathon through his performance at Prairie Fire Marathon and plans to compete again to secure his spot further.
Reflecting on past experiences, Fr. Arnold recounted underestimating his first marathon's challenges but learned valuable lessons about perseverance and self-knowledge.
Their shared interest has fostered camaraderie between them, with regular joint training sessions serving as an opportunity for personal connection and professional collaboration.
Running also serves as an outreach tool within their communities, allowing parishioners to see them engaging in everyday activities.
“It is fun to run in the neighborhood around the parish,” said Fr. Charles, while Fr. Arnold noted how it strengthens their bond: “Life is full of adventures...running marathons with Father Hayden...is a huge blessing.”
