Workers have recently installed a refurbished stained glass window depicting Our Lord’s presentation in the temple at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita. This installation followed the removal of the nativity window on December 5th. Scott Hoefer, president and owner of Hoefer’s Custom Stained Glass, expressed regret over the timing, noting that "it won’t be back for Christmas."
Hoefer's company, based in South Hutchinson, is responsible for restoring these windows. The absence of the nativity window during this Advent and Christmas season highlights the intricate artistry of the cathedral's stained glass. Hoefer remarked on their quality, stating, "They’re the best of the best," emphasizing their remarkable beauty.
The restoration process involves careful removal and transport to Hoefer's facility, followed by cleaning, repair, detailing, and replacement. This process takes approximately eight weeks per window before moving on to restore another. Hoefer considers it a worthwhile endeavor due to the exceptional quality of these art pieces: “Ranking from one to 10, I don’t know if there’s such a thing as a 10, but your windows are about as close as it gets.”
