St. George Catholic Church in Waimanalo celebrated its 70th anniversary on December 8, 2024, with the installation and blessing of a new shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The event coincided with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and brought together the parish community.
The Mexican members of the congregation, led by Luisa Gallardo, and Jesus and Nancy Gallardo, donated a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe and built the shrine. This gesture highlights the diverse community at St. George Parish. The shrine has been named “Ermita de la Virgen de Guadalupe” or “Hermitage of the Virgin of Guadalupe.”
Father Raymund Ellorin, pastor of St. George, along with Deacon Ricardo Burgos, celebrated Mass in Spanish to honor the cultural heritage of the donors. December 8th was chosen for this occasion due to its alignment with a significant day in Catholic faith.
After the installation and blessing ceremony, parishioners and guests enjoyed a celebration featuring authentic Mexican dishes and entertainment.
This event is part of year-long activities marking St. George Catholic Church's 70th anniversary. Known for its beautiful grounds and strong community spirit, it has been a faith cornerstone in Waimanalo since its founding.
As celebrations continue throughout the year, “Ermita de la Virgen de Guadalupe” stands as a testament to inclusivity and deep faith among parishioners.
