Reverend Larry Silva, Bishop | Diocese of Honolulu
On the Third Sunday of Advent, a homily was delivered focusing on themes of joy and divine love. The speaker drew parallels between singing at festivals and the joy expressed by God, as described by the prophet Zephaniah: “The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior; he will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love; he will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals.”
Addressing Preston, who is set to become a deacon and later a priest, the homily emphasized the importance of hearing God's voice amid life's chaos. It acknowledged Preston's journey to follow Jesus through service. "You may be a quiet man, an introvert," the speaker noted, "but your heart has learned to sing out the love of God in your service of others."
The homily also highlighted the practical aspects of ministry. It referenced John the Baptist's teachings on charity: “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.” Preston was encouraged to minister with charity and truth.
Preston's future responsibilities were outlined as teaching faith, caring for those in need, preaching God's Word, celebrating sacraments with dignity, and organizing evangelization efforts. The homily underscored that these duties serve as preludes to help others hear God's eternal song.
As Christmas approaches—a time when "God ceased to be mere background music"—the speaker called on Preston to amplify God's eternal love so that all may join in rejoicing: “Rejoice in the Lord always!”
