Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan | Archdiocese of New York
The Archdiocese of New York's Department of Education, under the Superintendent of Schools Office, is conducting a School Viability Study to assess and enhance the future sustainability of its Catholic schools. Sister Mary Grace Walsh, ASCJ, Ph.D., who serves as the Superintendent of Schools, has provided insights into this ongoing evaluation process.
Sister Mary Grace Walsh expressed her thoughts in a letter addressed to families and friends associated with Catholic schools. She stated: “As we enter the sacred season of Advent—a time of hopeful anticipation and preparation for the birth of our Savior—I am reminded of the Holy Family’s journey to Bethlehem. Despite the uncertainty they faced, their trust in God’s plan brought them encounters with shepherds and wise men, uniting all in the joyful mystery of Christ’s birth.”
The study aims to ensure careful stewardship over Catholic education within the archdiocese. Over recent months, schools have engaged in self-assessments, on-site visits, and discussions with educational leaders as part of this initiative. The process is guided by the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools (2023), focusing on four critical areas.
Sister Mary Grace emphasized: “This study is intended to serve as a guiding light, helping us strengthen and sustain the mission of Catholic education.” She added that during the Christmas season, her office will review all collected information "prayerfully and carefully" with a commitment to maintaining long-term vitality across Catholic education within the Archdiocese.
