Rev. James D. Conley, D.D., S.T.L. | Diocese of Lincoln website
Father Elias Mary Mills, a native of Kearney, Nebraska, shared insights into his spiritual journey and devotion to Mary in an interview with the Southern Nebraska Register. Father Elias discussed his early life in Nebraska, educational background at Peru State and Kearney State College, and his path to priesthood through Holy Apostles Seminary in Connecticut. He was ordained by Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of the Diocese of Lincoln in May 2000.
Reflecting on his mission work, Father Elias recalled his first assignment in Western Australia within the Archdiocese of Perth. Since returning to the United States in 2003, he has served in various friaries.
The Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate are known for their deep devotion to Mary. Father Elias emphasized this dedication: "I think that the message is that not Our Lady herself, but her Son is saying is, 'Please take Mary, my mother, to be your mother.'"
During a retreat at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly, Father Elias spoke about the significance of the brown scapular as a spiritual tool. He recounted its origins with St. Simon Stock and stressed its protective nature: "Our Lady appeared to him and held out the scapular and said... 'Whosoever shall die wearing this habit will not suffer the fires of hell.'"
Addressing contemporary concerns about societal challenges and church attendance decline, Father Elias offered reassurance: "Every age of the Church has always had its trials... The one thing that is constant is God’s love for us."
He concluded with a story about Colonel John W. Ripley as an illustration of faith's power during adversity: "But the thing he kept saying that got him through it was, 'Jesus, Mary, get me there.'" This phrase serves as a reminder for daily prayer and perseverance through life's challenges.
