The Archdiocese of Chicago is set to host the 19th Annual Posada for Immigration Reform on Friday, December 13, 2024. The event will commence at 11 a.m. outside the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Center located at 101 W. Ida B. Wells Dr. in Chicago. This year's theme is “God with us, hope along the journey.” The posada will be available via livestream on Facebook.
Cardinal Blase Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, emphasized the importance of compassion towards those seeking refuge: “As followers of Christ, we are called to show compassion to all, especially the most vulnerable. This includes those who seek refuge and a better life for themselves and their families.” He added that accompanying migrants is both a practical response and a spiritual practice.
The event is organized by the archdiocese’s Office of Human Dignity and Solidarity-Immigration Ministry and symbolizes Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem. It draws inspiration from traditional posadas celebrated in Mexico, Guatemala, and immigrant communities in the U.S., highlighting modern immigrants' vulnerability and need for legislative protection.
This year, other dioceses including New York, Newark, Baltimore, Joliet, Stockton (California), and Orange (California) will join by organizing their own prayer services in solidarity.
In Chicago, Bishop Mark Bartosic will lead a multilingual rosary and Gospel proclamation at the start of the walk. Each stop will feature prayers, songs, and reflections. The event concludes with a program at Old St. Patrick’s Church focusing on immigration issues.
Since May 2005, the Archdiocese has been active in advocating for immigrants through the Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
