The American Jewish Committee (AJC), in collaboration with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, has introduced a new resource aimed at addressing antisemitism through a Catholic perspective. The initiative, titled "Translate Hate: The Catholic Edition," seeks to foster cooperation between Catholic and Jewish communities in combating antisemitism.
This edition includes Catholic commentary on entries from AJC’s existing Translate Hate glossary, which covers various antisemitic terms, themes, and memes. It coincides with the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, a significant document from the Second Vatican Council that denounced antisemitism and reshaped the Church's relationship with Jewish people.
Bishop Joseph C. Bambera of Scranton, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, emphasized the importance of renewing commitments against antisemitism as global incidents rise. “For sixty years, dialogue has helped to establish lasting friendship among leaders in the Catholic and Jewish communities,” he stated. He added that this project exemplifies collaborative efforts to build bridges between Catholics and Jews.
Rabbi Noam Marans, AJC Director of Interreligious Affairs, highlighted the urgency of this initiative amid increasing antisemitic incidents. “This Catholic edition of Translate Hate is a groundbreaking project for Catholic-Jewish relations and could not come at a more needed time,” he said. Rabbi Marans also praised USCCB’s leadership in addressing antisemitism as part of a broader societal approach.
Holly Huffnagle, AJC U.S. Director for Combating Antisemitism, expressed hope that this resource will equip individuals with tools to recognize and address antisemitism effectively. “The first step in combating antisemitism is being able to understand and identify it,” she noted.
Translate Hate: The Catholic Edition will continue to evolve with additional commentaries as needed while expanding its glossary list.
The AJC is an advocacy organization dedicated to enhancing the well-being of Jewish people globally. Meanwhile, USCCB focuses on fostering relationships with other religious faiths within the United States through mutual understanding and collaboration.
