Christian Brothers University (CBU) has been acknowledged by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) for its significant contributions to the Memphis community over its 153-year history. Founded in 1871, CBU has played a vital role in education, innovation, and service within the region.
As part of TNECD's initiative to honor institutions with more than a century of contributions to Tennessee's economic and cultural landscape, CBU was celebrated for preparing leaders across various fields such as engineering, business, sciences, and arts. "We thank CBU for the invaluable service provided to this community through education and by preparing talent for the workforce," said Blake Swaggart, TNECD Regional Director. He emphasized TNECD's role in collaborating with partners to recruit new industries while supporting existing businesses by helping them find necessary talent.
CBU is among several organizations recognized as Tennessee’s centennial institutions, highlighting their resilience and contribution to the state's economy. "To say that we are proud of these businesses is an understatement," said TNECD Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter. He acknowledged these legacy companies for their success and contributions during challenging times like the pandemic.
The recognition event saw attendance from both professors and students of CBU, underscoring its ongoing commitment to student success and community engagement. Brother Chris Englert, Interim CBU President remarked on this acknowledgment: “This recognition is a testament to the strength of CBU’s mission... We are honored to be among Tennessee’s legacy institutions.”
For over 150 years, Christian Brothers University has been an integral part of Memphis' development, continuing its mission rooted in faith and service while looking towards future growth.
