Benedictine University has announced the relocation of its St. Benedict Chapel to Lownik Hall, offering a more central and accessible space for worship on campus. Previously situated on the fourth floor of Kindlon Hall, the chapel's new location is in the heart of the university's quad and near the Sister Judith Ann Heble, OSB Center for Benedictine Values.
“The relocation of St. Benedict Chapel is an answer to prayer and a dream come true. Now the Chapel is at the heart of our University campus, visible to all and accessible to all," said a statement from the university. "We are deeply grateful for all members of the community who have made the Chapel project a true labor of love. It will be a house of prayer for everyone who calls Benedictine home. Opened in the wintry days of Advent, it will inaugurate a new springtime of Spirit in our University life.”
The move also includes an expansion of the Adoration Chapel, which is located next to St. Benedict Chapel. This space features a tabernacle designed for private prayer and adoration.
A notable addition to this space is a Black Madonna piece gifted by students Julia Handzel and Krystian Chlebek. Chlebek expressed his sentiments about their donation: “The Black Madonna, to me, symbolizes Polish pride and perseverance. I am proud to be Polish and share my culture and tradition with those around me." He added that he hopes it serves as an inspiration for those facing difficulties: "I wanted to share that symbol with everyone who is going through tough times or is struggling to never give up and have faith in the Holy Mother and God."
Chlebek noted that his connection with God has been strengthened alongside his girlfriend Handzel, stating their hope that "the Black Madonna Blesses the school and anyone who prays to her."
