Christian Brothers University (CBU) has officially opened its new Innovation Lab within the Rosa Deal School of Arts. This facility, located in Buckman Hall, is dedicated to advancing education for Studio and Graphic Design majors by providing access to state-of-the-art technology. It marks the first lab on campus solely focused on graphic design, enabling students to create physical mock-ups of their ideas.
Nick Peña, Interim Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Art at the Rosa Deal School of Arts, stated, “This lab bridges the gap between academic learning and practical application, enhancing design education and equipping graduates to be more versatile, skilled, and prepared for a wide range of career paths.” He highlighted the lab’s importance in transforming CBU's graphic design program by offering hands-on experience with industry-relevant tools.
The establishment of the Innovation Lab was made possible through an AutoZone Environmental Entrepreneurism grant after a year and a half of careful planning. Melinda Posey, Associate Professor of Graphic Design, remarked, “This lab represents a significant leap forward for our program, bridging the gap between design and tangible creation and empowering students to expand their design horizons as they enter their professional fields.”
The grand opening event took place on November 12. Attendees were given tours of the facility with live demonstrations showcasing the capabilities of the equipment available in this new space.
CBU anticipates that the Innovation Lab will have a lasting impact not only on its students but also on the local community by fostering creativity, skill-building opportunities, and engagement with industry professionals directly on campus.
