Most Reverend Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, has announced the passing of Reverend Raymond F. Schmidt, a retired priest from the Diocese of Brooklyn. Father Schmidt was born on September 24, 1934, in New York and was ordained on May 28, 1960. He passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

Throughout his service to the Diocese of Brooklyn, Father Schmidt held various roles including Pastor at the Parish of Saint Mary in Long Island City and Parochial Vicar at several parishes: Sacred Heart in Bayside, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Astoria, Saint Mark in Brooklyn, Saint Benedict Joseph Labre in Richmond Hill, and Saint Rita in Long Island City. He resided at the Bishop Mugavero Residence located in Douglaston, New York. In addition to his religious duties, he served as Lieutenant Colonel and Chaplain for the U.S. Army.

The arrangements for Father Schmidt are scheduled as follows:

- The wake will be held at Immaculate Conception Center located at 7200 Douglaston Parkway in Douglaston, New York on Friday, September 27 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Saturday, September 28 from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM.

- The funeral mass will take place at Immaculate Conception Center on Saturday, September 28 at 11:00 AM.

- Burial will follow at Saint John Cemetery in Middle Village, New York.

Father Schmidt was part of the Priests’ Purgatorial Society. "Please pray for the repose of his soul and for the consolation of his family and friends," said Monsignor Steven J. Aguggia. "May he rest in the peace of Christ."

Condolences can be sent to his sister Ms. Patricia Schmidt at her address in New Britain or to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Schmidt in Rockville Center.

Reverend Monsignor Steven J. Aguggia serves as Chancellor and Vicar for Canonical Affairs.
