Bishop Carroll Catholic High School students have successfully collected 27,744 cans of food for the Our Daily Bread Food Pantry, a part of Catholic Charities. This initiative is part of a longstanding tradition at the school. Jessica Bergman, a math teacher and BCCHS alumna from 2001, highlighted that this year's collection was the fourth largest since 2016. The record was set in 2021 with 34,540 cans.
The drive culminated on October 28, with Star Lumber & Supply providing the necessary resources to transport the donations to the pantry located at 2825 S. Hillside in Wichita. Bergman emphasized the importance of understanding where these donations go and encouraged students to recognize their impact beyond competition incentives like an extra sweats day.
To reinforce this message, announcements were made throughout the school about the purpose of the drive and details about Our Daily Bread Food Pantry. Testimonies from former BCCHS math teachers John and Connie Kennedy, who volunteer at the pantry, along with current students who participated in Service Day activities there, were shared over the intercom.
Bergman noted that many parents are alumni who participated in similar drives during their time as students. "It’s a tradition to have BC do this drive," she said.
