Stephen Haymes Diversity Presidential Fellow | Depaul University
The Theatre School at DePaul University has received a significant boost with a $1 million donation from Kristen E. Hansen. This contribution establishes the Christine A. Binder Endowed Scholarship in Lighting Design, aimed at supporting students majoring in this field, particularly those from underrepresented groups in the performing arts.
Hansen, who dedicated over 27 years to various roles at DePaul before retiring in 2023, expressed her admiration for The Theatre School's innovative methods and pedagogy. Her son, Brian Gallagher, a graduate of the school, benefited from these advancements during his studies.
DePaul University President Robert L. Manuel acknowledged Hansen's generosity: “A core value of DePaul’s Catholic, Vincentian mission is serving others, and Kris exemplifies that quality,” he said. “Her generosity will make a difference for generations of students.”
The scholarship honors Christine Binder, head of Lighting Design at The Theatre School. Binder's influence extends to numerous students and includes notable work with institutions such as the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Steppenwolf Theatre.
Binder expressed her gratitude: “I’m absolutely honored by this scholarship’s naming and thrilled for the students for whom it will make such a difference.” She emphasized the importance of storytelling through light and appreciated Hansen's support in enabling future artists to share their stories.
Dr. Martine Kei Green-Rogers, dean of The Theatre School, highlighted the school's centennial celebration in 2025 and recognized Hansen's role: “Arts patrons like Kris play an essential role in making that happen... On behalf of The Theatre School, brava, Kris!”
The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program at The Theatre School offers students practical experience alongside artistic exploration using modern tools and technologies. Students collaborate with professional faculty across state-of-the-art facilities on campus.
