The American Principles Project (APP) has released a report accusing the Biden-Harris Department of Education of unfairly targeting Christian colleges and universities. According to the report, nearly 70 percent of enforcement actions by the department have involved faith-based and career schools, which account for less than 10 percent of students nationwide.
The APP claims that the Department’s Office of Enforcement was created with an implicit purpose to advance what they describe as the Biden-Harris administration's "woke agenda." The office reportedly targeted Grand Canyon University and Liberty University, two prominent Christian institutions, resulting in record-level fines exceeding those imposed over the past seven years combined.
According to APP, at least 12 Christian colleges faced excessive penalties or were banned from receiving federal student aid. In contrast, no Ivy League schools have been subjected to punitive action by this office. The average fine against a Christian school for Clery Act violations was $815,000 compared to $228,571 against other public and private institutions.
Jon Schweppe, APP Policy Director, commented on these findings: “For the last four years, Democrats have been busy weaponizing every part of the federal government to target their opponents. While major assaults from agencies like the Department of Justice have taken most of the headlines, we should not ignore similarly corrupt efforts in other agencies as well. As our report details, the Biden-Harris Department of Education has been engaged in a long-running scheme to punish Christian colleges that are ideologically opposed to the left’s agenda. The unfair targeting of these institutions has been egregious, and it needs to stop immediately."
Schweppe also expressed support for former President Donald Trump's approach during his first term when he deprioritized this Enforcement Office. He stated that "his next administration should eliminate it," adding that APP looks forward to collaborating with potential future administrations led by Trump-Vance and Republican leaders to address what they view as a campaign against faith-based universities.
