Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago is set to commemorate its 175th anniversary with a series of events starting this November. The celebration will begin with two significant liturgies. On Monday, November 18, at noon, Alderman Brendan Reilly will present a city resolution to Father Greg Sakowicz, the cathedral's rector. This event will mark the day as Holy Name Cathedral Day in Chicago.

Following this, on Sunday, November 24, at 12:30 p.m., Cardinal Blase Cupich, archbishop of Chicago and pastor of the cathedral, will lead the opening Mass for the anniversary year. During this service, Father Sakowicz will acknowledge Cardinal Cupich's decade-long tenure as Chicago’s archbishop.

Both Masses are scheduled to be live-streamed on Holy Name Cathedral’s YouTube channel for wider accessibility.

The theme for the anniversary year is "Faith in Action." Alongside these initial services, the cathedral has organized a full year of special events including services and concerts to honor its historical and spiritual legacy. These activities aim to celebrate the cathedral’s longstanding role in providing spiritual leadership and pastoral care while also engaging with the arts.

Cardinal Cupich reflected on the occasion stating, “As we mark Holy Name Cathedral’s 175 years of faith, resilience, and service, we are reminded of the countless people who have found solace, inspiration, and hope within these walls.” He added that this milestone is an opportunity not only to reflect on past achievements but also to focus on future contributions to the community.

The origins of Holy Name Parish date back to November 18, 1849. It was dedicated by Bishop James Oliver Van de Velde at its current location on State Street between Superior and Huron streets. Over nearly two centuries, it has served as both a parish and a key site within the Archdiocese of Chicago. The cathedral has been witness to numerous pivotal moments in Chicago's history and continues to serve as a refuge during difficult times.
