DePaul University is moving forward with plans to enhance its athletic programs, thanks to a $2.5 million donation from Jennifer Steans and James Kastenholz. The gift will help fund a new basketball practice facility on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus.
"Thanks to the generosity and vision of Jen and Jim, we are reimagining the power of DePaul for the modern moment," said Robert L. Manuel, President of DePaul University. "The entire university will benefit from a vibrant athletics program that prioritizes success for student-athletes and elevates the visibility of our institution as a national leader in quality higher education."
Steans and Kastenholz have supported various initiatives at DePaul, including the John Horan Scholars Program, which aids students from North Lawndale College Prep High School with financial need. Steans serves as a member of DePaul's Board of Trustees and leads Financial Investments Corporation, while also being involved with The Steans Family Foundation.
The planned facility aims to align with DePaul's Vincentian mission by enhancing community service and educational access. It is part of a broader philanthropic expansion announced in 2023 that includes academic initiatives with an interdisciplinary focus.
"Athletics holds tremendous value for DePaul, serving as a vehicle for national exposure, fostering connectivity with alumni, engaging with the Chicago community, and enhancing school spirit among our university community," said DeWayne Peevy, Vice President and Director of Athletics at DePaul. "Our facilities signal our seriousness and commitment to our student-athletes, and we are immensely grateful to Jennifer and Jim for their forward-thinking leadership and generosity."
The design features an exterior brick façade complementing the Lincoln Park neighborhood's aesthetic. Coaches Doug Bruno and Chris Holtmann are expected to use the facility to foster a championship mindset among their teams.
