In Girard, a group of Dominican nuns continues the tradition of monastic life at the Dominican Monastery of Mary the Queen. The 13 nuns reside in rural Macoupin County, living a life centered around prayer and community service.

Sister Anna Marie Pierre, OP, prioress of the monastery, describes their community as "an international, intercultural, and intergenerational community that strives to live the Gospel message as passed on to us by our Holy Father St. Dominic."

The monastery's history traces back to Elmira in Central New York, where it was founded in 1944. The nuns moved to Illinois in 2014 and eventually settled in Girard in 2022. They are joined by sisters from various states and countries.

A resident chaplain, Father Edward Ruane, OP, resides nearby. Mass is celebrated daily except Tuesdays, with public participation encouraged. Prayer is central to their lives. Sister Anna Marie emphasizes its importance: "Our prayer life is the most important element of who we are."

Despite living in a monastery, the nuns engage with the outside world through prayer requests and limited use of technology. Sister Anna Marie notes they use computers for work and study while maintaining contact with visitors.

Life at the monastery involves daily routines such as cooking and gardening. Each sister contributes according to her abilities. Relaxation activities vary among sisters but include walking, reading, or painting.

The new monastery spans approximately 21,000 square feet and includes various facilities like a chapel and library. The grounds feature natural beauty with woods and water bodies that enhance contemplative life.

The nuns have been part of the Springfield diocese for nearly a decade but remain relatively unknown locally. Efforts are underway to raise awareness about their presence and vocation opportunities.

Sister Anna Marie extends an invitation to women considering this path: “It is a very special and precious grace... If you are called and you are faithful, you will not be disappointed.”

The public can join daily Masses at the monastery located at 15635 Greenridge Road in Girard or participate in other religious activities offered by the nuns.
