Benedictine University recently hosted a series of events for its Black Alumni Network. The weekend's activities included the participation of Warrington Parker, PhD, a notable alumnus who graduated in 1962 as the first African American from Saint Procopius College, now known as Benedictine University.
Dr. Parker expressed his appreciation for being part of the event: “First, I was honored to be even asked to attend the inaugural launch of the Black Alumni Network event. I was also pleased for being honored as the first African American to graduate from Saint Procopius College in 1962.” He further described the gathering as familial, saying, “They were like family to me. It was like attending a family reunion. I felt the warmth and graciousness of everyone, especially Kenneth Carruthers and Maurice Bell.”
The alumni present at the event represented various eras of the institution's history, including graduates from St. Procopius College, Illinois Benedictine College, and Benedictine University.
The weekend began with a mixer at Coal Ben, offering alumni an opportunity to reconnect and share memories. On Saturday, attendees enjoyed a private stadium suite experience during a game between the Eagles and Green Knights. The events concluded with a "Reflections" dinner that evening.
During this dinner, Dr. Parker delivered a keynote speech following a formal presentation on BAN's purpose. Benedictine University aims for this successful gathering to inspire more alumni networks within its community in the future.
