Shelby Dunn, a Nebraska native, is preparing to embark on a missionary journey to Germany. Her mission is to support U.S. military teens through Club Beyond, a ministry that assists military families in navigating their unique challenges. This opportunity allows Dunn to combine her passion for youth ministry with her respect for the military.
Dunn's interest in these areas began during her upbringing in North Bend and attendance at Sacred Heart Parish at Cedar Hill. She volunteered as a catechist’s aid and developed a deep respect for the military after visiting Arlington National Cemetery.
Initially pursuing a degree in rangeland management at Chadron State College, Dunn realized she was uncertain about her future career path. A summer experience as a Totus Tuus missionary opened her eyes to full-time ministry work with teens and children.
In 2022, Dunn discovered Club Beyond, an ecumenical ministry dedicated to helping military teens manage frequent relocations and other pressures of military life. "It felt like God was opening doors in a direction I hadn’t considered," she said.
Club Beyond offers various activities such as group events, Bible studies, and one-on-one ministry sessions. Dunn will be the only Catholic staff member and looks forward to connecting with Catholic teens within the ministry.
Dunn will be stationed in Germany for three years. She expressed excitement about experiencing a new culture and forming meaningful connections with the teens she will serve. Her advice to others considering missionary work is: “Don’t be afraid to follow God’s calling.”
