Jamie Mellado's journey with the Catholic Campus Ministry (CCM) at the University of Central Florida has been transformative. Initially attending a CCM event to support a friend, Mellado found himself drawn into a community that changed his life. Despite an upbringing in a Jehovah Witness household and subsequent disillusionment with faith, Mellado discovered a renewed interest in spirituality during college.
His journey began when he reluctantly joined a Bible study, leading to a deeper exploration of Catholicism after meeting a young Catholic woman at work. This exploration eventually brought him to CCM events organized by the Brotherhood of Hope and St. Paul’s Outreach Missionaries.
Brother Adam Neri of the Brotherhood of Hope assured Mellado that he could find a home within this community. "You can make a home here," Brother Neri told him. At these events, Mellado met Father Benjamin Lehnertz and formed friendships that became akin to family. His involvement with CCM grew as he sought authentic friendships and spiritual growth.
Brother Sawyer Phillips observed Mellado's dedication, noting his willingness to travel long distances for CCM activities. "People are looking for somewhere they can be themselves and be welcomed," Brother Phillips said, emphasizing the importance of belonging leading to belief and personal growth.
Mellado's transformation was also supported by Flavio Teimouri, who befriended him at CCM events and offered guidance beyond graduation. Teimouri related to Mellado through shared experiences of feeling rejected but finding acceptance within the CCM community.
In April 2024, Mellado received the Sacrament of Confirmation and graduated from UCF. He continues to contribute to CCM by leading Bible studies and heading a weekly men's group while pursuing further education in marine mechanics.
Reflecting on his experience, Mellado remarked on the unique nature of the CCM community: "There are a lot of good communities out there, but CCM is something very, very special."
