Walsh University has received a $348,708 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women. The funding is intended to support the Cavalier Safeguard Initiative 3.0, which aims to enhance campus safety and prevent interpersonal violence.
The project will run for three years, from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2027. It seeks to build on existing safety programs in collaboration with local organizations such as COMPASS Rape Crisis Center and Domestic Violence Project, Inc., along with the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office. Key areas of focus include raising awareness about support services and providing tailored sexual assault prevention education for veterans.
Melanie Timco, Director of Prevention Education and Programming at Walsh University, commented on the significance of the grant: “As we mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month, this grant allows us to further advance our mission of creating a safe, supportive community.” She highlighted ongoing initiatives like the Campus Culture Survey and the Red Flag Campaign that aim to raise awareness and encourage action against relationship violence.
The university's safety programs have been effective in maintaining low incident rates annually. The new funding will help expand activities such as a weekly Date Night/Friend Night series promoting healthy relationships. Additionally, events like a Healing Hike scheduled for October 10 are designed for survivors and supporters. An Interpersonal Leadership Endorsement micro-credential course will also be offered on October 22.
