Archbishop Allen Vigneron | Archdiocese of Detriot

The Archdiocese of Detroit has addressed concerns regarding the Michigan Catholic Tribune, a newspaper claiming to be Catholic, which is being distributed to parishioners in some parts of Michigan. The Archdiocese clarified that this publication is neither endorsed by nor affiliated with it and does not possess the necessary authorization under Canon law to identify itself as Catholic.

According to Canon 216 from the 1983 Code of Canon Law, "no undertaking is to claim the name Catholic without the consent of competent ecclesiastical authority." The Archdiocese emphasized that it has not provided any mailing information to this organization.

Additionally, the Archdiocese reiterated its dedication to appropriate political and electoral engagement for Catholic organizations. This commitment aligns with guidance from both the Michigan Catholic Conference (MCC) and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). They stated, "Churches and other 501 (c) (3) institutions that qualify for tax-exempt status under the Internal Revenue Code are not permitted to be involved in partisan politics, including any expressions of preference, support for, or opposition to any specific candidates or political parties."
