Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita

Fr. Seth Arnold recently blessed youth participating in an Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at a newly named diocesan camp, Camp Kapaun. The camp's development is supported by the ongoing One Family, Fully Alive in Christ! Capital Campaign. Bishop Carl A. Kemme shared his reflections on naming the former Boy Scout Camp, now owned by the Diocese of Wichita.

Bishop Kemme expressed his hope for the camp's future, noting that over 800 youth attended Totus Tuus camps there last summer. He stated, "I have every confidence that with the support of the Diocesan Capital Campaign, One Family, Fully Alive in Christ!, we will be able to develop this camp into a camp that will serve thousands of young people and their families for many years to come."

The decision to name the camp after Father Emil J. Kapaun was influenced by suggestions from the Catholic Advance community. Bishop Kemme explained, "Therefore, without further ado, I have determined that the official new name for the new diocesan camp will be THE FATHER EMIL J. KAPAUN FAMILY AND YOUTH CAMP! The camp may also be called by a shorter version: CAMP KAPAUN!"

Father Kapaun was known for his dedication as a chaplain and his heroic virtues during his time as a POW in a prison camp. Bishop Kemme hopes Father Kapaun’s example will inspire youth and families visiting Camp Kapaun to grow in discipleship and stewardship.

Bishop Kemme concluded with aspirations for Father Kapaun’s sainthood cause advancement and invited all to seek spiritual renewal at Camp Kapaun.
