Many themes emerge throughout the month of October in the life of the Church. It is Respect Life Month, a time to pray more intentionally in thanksgiving to God for the gift of life and to ensure this gift is safeguarded from conception until natural death. Additionally, World Mission Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of October, providing an opportunity to learn about missionaries' work spreading the Gospel globally. The Church also dedicates this month to Mary under the title of “Our Lady of the Rosary.” This feast day commemorates Christians' prayers in Europe during the late 16th century as they sought Mary's intercession against invading forces.

Reflecting on these themes reveals their underlying unity through the life and example of Mary. Raised by Saints Joachim and Anne, Mary developed a deep love for God and respect for religious traditions. She dedicated herself to God's service from a young age, believing that every life is meant to glorify God. When Gabriel asked her to be Jesus' mother, she trusted in God's presence despite not fully understanding.

Mary's faith journey continued as she raised Jesus with Joseph, instilling values and faith learned from her parents. Witnessing Jesus' public ministry, Mary saw His care for others, especially the poor and outcasts—a reflection of what He learned from her. Jesus' desire for all people to have eternal life grew with His Divine understanding, leading Him to spread God's love widely.

As one of Jesus' first disciples, Mary supported early Church missionaries and continues interceding for them today. Her role as a woman of deep prayer highlights how she turned matters over in her heart before God, discovering more about His work and our call to participate in it.

This month encourages closeness to Mary, learning from her about life's value, striving to bring others closer to God's Love, and praying for those in need.
