Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach (MTKO) in Lincoln is seeking volunteers for the 28th annual “Huskers Helping the Homeless” event scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 20.

Organizers aim to raise over $55,000 for hunger relief and homeless prevention services.

MTKO assists an increasing number of guests each year, with needs continuing to grow. In 2023, Matt Talbot provided more than 250,000 meals through onsite prepared meals, food pantries, and donated food distribution—a 39% increase from 2022. Nearly 90,000 prepared meals were served, averaging 245 meals per day. Additionally, 3,350 individuals were assisted through all programs, marking a 21% increase.

To address these needs, MTKO is recruiting volunteers to collect monetary donations on behalf of Matt Talbot. Volunteers can participate in 90-minute time slots before the Husker football game on Friday, Sept. 20, or at grocery stores throughout Lincoln from Sept. 19-21. Other volunteer opportunities include holding online fundraisers or organizing collections at pre-game or tailgate parties. Interested individuals can sign up at mtko.org.

“The money raised during this event supports our operations 365 days a year and brings us closer to our vision of defeating hunger and homelessness in Lincoln,” said Alynn Sampson, executive director.
