Lincoln, NE – Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser visited Nebraska today to meet with Gov. Jim Pillen and pregnancy center leaders, highlighting the state's initiatives to support women and children. The visit included a tour of a pregnancy center and a roundtable discussion focusing on pro-life policies aimed at aiding mothers.
This legislative session, Nebraska lawmakers passed a law providing tax credits for pregnancy centers that offer free ultrasounds, diapers, strollers, baby clothes, and other necessities to mothers in need. Gov. Pillen signed this bill into law alongside another measure extending the time frame for newborns to be surrendered at hospitals, fire stations, law enforcement agencies, or emergency care providers. Additionally, the Governor declared 2024 as the year to advance Nebraska’s culture of life and launched AGoodLife.NE.Gov, a resource platform for mothers and babies.
Nebraska is among several states increasing post-Dobbs support for women and children. Florida allocated $25 million for pregnancy help centers; North Carolina established new funds for childcare and paid parental leave for teachers and state employees; and West Virginia initiated the Mothers and Babies Support Program under Gov. Justice to assist women in need.
Dannenfelser expressed gratitude towards Gov. Pillen:
“We thank Gov. Jim Pillen and those leading Nebraska’s pregnancy centers for their efforts to support moms and babies in the state, and for welcoming us to Nebraska as our first stop to highlight the work of pro-life leaders. After enacting a critical 12-week protection into law last year, Nebraska’s pregnancy centers are coming alongside women with unplanned pregnancies to offer free ultrasounds, counseling, diapers, formula and housing assistance. Gov. Pillen and legislative leaders have taken action to support Nebraska’s pregnancy centers with tax credits so that more women have help during pregnancy and after a child is born.”
In May 2023, Nebraska became one of 24 states protecting life in the womb after the first trimester when Gov. Pillen signed legislation advancing protections by 10 weeks earlier than previously mandated. The 12-week protection includes exceptions for rape, incest, and life-threatening conditions for the mother.
By 12 weeks’ gestation, all major organs have formed in fetuses; they can suck their thumbs and show hand preferences. At this stage of development, prominent facial features are recognizable; teeth begin forming; and the body responds to touch.
