Following the state Supreme Court’s rejection of a challenge to Prop 139, Arizonans will vote on a sweeping abortion ballot measure this November. The proposed amendment would allow second- and third-trimester abortions, eliminate women’s health protections, eliminate parental rights, and ensure taxpayer-funded abortion.
State Public Affairs Director for SBA Pro-Life America Kelsey Pritchard warned voters about what is at stake in November: “Arizona already allows abortion until 15 weeks when a baby can smile, suck their thumb and feel pain. Arizona’s abortion amendment would go even further legalizing second- and third-trimester abortions. The California-style amendment is no different than the pro-abortion amendments the ACLU and Planned Parenthood have bankrolled elsewhere. After Michigan passed Prop 3 in 2022, Gov. Whitmer signed a bill to dismantle the state’s partial birth abortion ban and the abortion lobby is suing to require taxpayers to fund abortion, undo informed consent, and allow non-doctors to perform abortions.”
In 2022, Michigan passed Prop 3, an abortion amendment similar to Arizona’s and those being proposed in other pro-life states. In the following legislative session, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill to end the state’s partial birth abortion ban. When the legislature was unable to remove informed consent and guarantee taxpayer-funded abortion, the ACLU and abortion industry brought litigation based on the amendment.
The abortion lobby is targeting seven red states with abortion amendments in 2024. In addition to Arizona, activists are pushing extreme amendments in South Dakota, Florida, Montana, Nebraska, Missouri, and Arkansas.
