St. John’s University, in collaboration with NYS Assemblymember Nily Rozic and the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY), will host a community shredding event on Thursday, August 15, from 9 a.m. to noon at the University’s Queens, NY campus. This initiative aims to help residents safeguard their personal information and curb identity theft.
Assemblymember Rozic emphasized the importance of such events for community protection against identity theft. “I am thrilled with the shared partnership with St. John’s and DSNY for organizing this impactful shredding event,” she said. “Safeguarding our community's security is paramount, and local events like this help to educate residents about best practices and secure document disposal.”
Residents are invited to enter St. John’s University at Gate 3 located on Utopia Parkway and 80th Road to drop off up to three "copy box-size" boxes of documents for safe, on-site disposal. The service is free of charge, reinforcing the organizers’ commitment to combating identity theft and ensuring residents' well-being.
“A shredding event is a helpful way to raise community awareness about the importance of secure document disposal, and St. John’s is proud to partner with Assemblymember Rozic to provide a convenient solution,” stated Brian Browne, Associate Vice President of University Communications and Public Affairs.
Participants can securely dispose of confidential documents such as tax forms, insurance papers, and legal documents during the event. There is a limit of three boxes per person, and only paper materials will be accepted. Metal, plastic, magazines, cardboard, clothing, X-rays, batteries, cell phones, or metal binder clips are not allowed as they may damage shredders.
