The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies has announced the appointment of Dr. John Kincaid as vice president of academics, effective June 1.

Dr. Kincaid, originally from Pittsburgh, holds a Ph.D. in theology from Ave Maria University (2015), a master of theology from Duke University, a master of arts in theology from Covenant Theological Seminary, and a bachelor’s degree in theology from Geneva College. He and his wife Kristen have seven children.

Dr. Kincaid co-authored “Paul, A New Covenant Jew: Rethinking Pauline Theology” with Dr. Brant Pitre and Dr. Michael Barber. Before joining The Emmaus Institute, he served as chair and associate professor of theology at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. He also held positions on the theology faculties at John Paul the Great Catholic University and Franciscan University of Steubenville.

His research focuses on Pauline theology and its reception history, soteriology (doctrine of salvation) as explored by Augustine and Aquinas, and contemporary biblical hermeneutics (interpretation). Dr. Kincaid is finalizing a manuscript on justification in Pauline letters and working on an upcoming book about St. Paul and the priesthood with Father John Riccardo of ACTS XXIX.

In his new role at The Emmaus Institute, Dr. Kincaid will oversee all academic affairs and contribute to expanding its mission through new resources for formation and collaborations with scholars and apostolates. He will initially work remotely from Bismarck to stay close to family while engaging virtually with students, supplemented by occasional in-person classes and events in Lincoln.

“It was quickly apparent to all of us that John passionately shares the spirit of Emmaus and that his addition to the team was providentially ordered,” said Dr. Vern Steiner, president of Emmaus. “His academic record attests to the quality of his scholarship and professionalism, but most importantly, he is a man who serves his vocation to his family as a faithful husband and father who loves the Lord, and who is passionate about sharing that love with all who listen.”
