"Something Super," an original musical by S.T.A.G.E. Student Theatre, will be presented June 21-23 and June 28-30. The production, performed by students ages 9-17, will be held at The City Impact Building, 1035 N. 33rd Street, in Lincoln.
S.T.A.G.E. founder, writer, and director Lee Ann Hotovy described "Something Super" as a retro show that brings to life superheroes and supervillains similar to the famous "Batman" TV series that aired from 1966 to 1968.
In the retro musical, the city of Normopolis is threatened by super-villains who sabotage the city with an over-abundance of ordinary problems. Although the citizens call out to the superheroes for help, they find that the heroes have gone on vacation since solving ordinary problems is beneath their super-abilities.
“That leaves Mediocre Man and his trusty sidekick, Guinea Pig Girl to save the day,” Hotovy said. “But can they? Things look very grim until the Secret C.O.A. agents arrive and inspire Mediocre Man with ‘Paraclete Power.’”
Audrey Johnson plays Guinea Pig Girl, while Aidan Shasserre takes on the role of Mediocre Man. Hotovy noted that the fun and exciting musical will delight audiences with “‘Pow’-erful humor, ‘sock-it-to-em’ music and dance, and creativity galore!”
“It also delivers the message: ‘Even the ordinary guy on the street can do super things with God’s awesome grace,’” she added.
Other contributors include Amy Johnson as musical director and Lydia Hotovy as choreographer. Original musical numbers were written by Anna Hanselmann, Melanie Kottwitz, and Sada Wondercheck.
Hotovy founded S.T.A.G.E. (Student Theater and Godly Evangelization) in 1999 to provide a creative outlet for children of all ages. Celebrating its 25th year, the youth theater produces two to three shows annually, with a larger production during summer involving students from Lincoln and surrounding rural areas.
"Something Super!" will be presented at 7 p.m. on June 21, 22, 28, and 29; at 2 p.m. on June 23 and June 30. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime. The show runs approximately two hours with intermission and concessions available.
Reserved seating tickets are recommended and can be purchased under “TICKETS” at www.stage4kids.com. General admission tickets are available at the door for $12 for adults and $8 for students (ages 4-18), with lap-sitting children (3 years old and under) admitted free.
