At Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona, the mission to assist individuals and families in building better lives is evident. This commitment was highlighted through the story of Lidia and her son, Nelson, who fled Nicaragua for Guatemala with aspirations beyond those of ordinary immigrants.
In Guatemala, they established a successful barber shop that quickly became popular. However, their success attracted unwanted attention, leading to an attack that destroyed their business. This incident mirrored the persecution they faced in Nicaragua and underscored the challenges on their journey.
Seeking safety, Lidia and Nelson found refuge in a displaced persons' camp while dreaming of a safer future in the United States. "Crime exists everywhere, but the law is upheld in America, which makes a significant difference. I feel safe here," Lidia said during an interview.
During their resettlement process in the U.S., they received support from the Reception and Placement program, an initiative by the U.S. State Department to aid refugees fleeing persecution. Alba Garcia, Program Director at CCS Immigration Services, explained: "The Reception and Placement program provides essential services during the first 90 days with a small stipend to help support them financially, followed by up to five years of support through the Refugee Services Program."
CCS has a long history of resettling refugees dating back to post-Korean War efforts. The Immigration Services program played a crucial role in aiding Lidia and Nelson's journey. This fiscal year, CCS aims to resettle 200 individuals. "Housing remains a significant challenge for us, especially for small families and single individuals," Garcia noted. "Cash donations could make a real difference in providing rental assistance and meeting essential needs during the initial 90-day resettlement period."
Despite numerous challenges, Lidia's spirit remained unbroken. "I always pray to God that He will provide for me," she shared gratefully towards CCS for its unwavering support.
The interview coincided with Nelson's immigration status approval—a milestone marked by an emotional reunion at Tucson International Airport between mother and son. With tears of joy, Lidia expressed her excitement about embracing American culture and starting anew.
Recently updated information reveals that both Lidia and Nelson have secured employment as they actively pursue their American dream with determination.
Lidia and Nelson’s journey from Nicaragua through Guatemala to ultimately finding safety in the United States exemplifies resilience and hope among refugees seeking better futures.
Catholic Community Services (CCS) continues its commitment to aiding refugees during their initial resettlement period. While working towards resettling 200 individuals this fiscal year—having already welcomed 120—securing housing remains challenging due to limited funds.
