Bishop Thomas John Paprocki | Diocese of Springfield
St. Francis of Assisi Church, located on the peaceful grounds of the St. Francis of Assisi campus in Springfield, recently marked a significant milestone with a special celebration. The Norbertine Fathers of Corpus Christi Priory hosted a Mass on April 27 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the church's dedication.
Fr. Augustine Puchner, O.Praem., expressed the community's gratitude, stating, "We are thrilled to be here at the priory and using this beautiful and historic church every day for our prayers." He also reflected on the rich history of the church, saying, "It’s a bit overwhelming to consider all the prayers, especially the Masses, that have been offered in this church over the past 100 years! For us to now be part of that history and legacy is both humbling and inspiring."
The special Mass was attended by distinguished guests, including Bishop Kevin Vann of the Diocese of Orange, Abbot Eugene Hayes, O.Praem., and Prior Chrysostom Baer, O.Praem. Among the features that stood out to Father Puchner were "the beautiful tabernacle, the elevated sanctuary, and the full balcony that goes completely around the whole church."
Sister Maureen O’Connor, OSF, Superior of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, shared her sentiments about the church, highlighting the significance of the terrazzo floor where numerous ceremonies and Masses have taken place over the years. She emphasized, "God was present then and continues to be present now in this magnificent church."
In addition to its architectural beauty, St. Francis of Assisi Church has become a spiritual hub for the community. The Norbertine Fathers offer daily Masses and prayers, welcoming all to participate in the liturgies and services held at the church.
The celebration also acknowledged the establishment of the new Corpus Christi Priory by the Norbertine Fathers of St. Michael’s Abbey, which has been positively received for its Evermode Institute, providing education in the fundamentals of the Catholic faith.
As St. Francis of Assisi Church enters its second century, it remains a symbol of faith and community in Springfield, offering a place for prayer, reflection, and spiritual growth.
