Bishop Carroll Catholic High School’s St. Joseph Construction Science and Trade Academy has been making waves in the education sector, with its recent recognition as the Kansas High School Program of the Year for 2023 by the National Center for Construction Education and Research. This accolade has not only brought prestige to the academy but has also resulted in tangible benefits for the school community.
Under the leadership of Course instructor Brad Carey, the academy has been providing students with a unique opportunity to explore construction science and trades as viable career paths. Carey explained, "The program started eight years ago under the direction of Al Rohleder to give our students here at Bishop Carroll that opportunity or an avenue to explore, either as a trade or a degree in construction science."
Despite the program's success, Carey highlighted the lack of awareness in the community about the academy and the increasing interest in trades as an alternative to traditional college education. He emphasized the importance of student motivation in driving their success, stating, "It’s that motivation that really drives these students more than a lot of other high school programs."
With a focus on hands-on learning and practical skills development, the academy has seen students transition from predetermined career paths to embracing construction science and related fields. Carey noted, "We’re moving more men and women into the trades – more than we thought ever possible – thanks to the exposure they get in this class."
The academy's impact goes beyond the classroom, as local businesses have played a crucial role in supporting its initiatives. Carey expressed gratitude towards these companies, stating, "These companies make it possible to be able to build a 10- by 32-foot tiny house. All of the materials were donated."
As students continue to thrive in the St. Joseph Construction Science and Trade Academy, the school looks towards a future where more young individuals are equipped with the skills and knowledge to pursue successful careers in the construction industry.
