The Catholic Foundation recently brought smiles to the faces of over 120 children at Diamond Children’s Medical Center by delivering care packages filled with stuffed animals, blankets, and sensory toys. The initiative was part of the Foundation’s Thankful Thursday program, where diocesan staff come together to support organizations in need.

Deacon Leo Longoria, a 92-year-old supporter of the Foundation, played a significant role in the donation. Last year, he established a charitable endowment in memory of his daughter Veronica, who had special needs and a deep compassion for serving others. Reflecting on the mission, Deacon Leo stated, “I feel very honored and blessed to meet you all, and thankful for our patients who will benefit from all the love and support you’re providing us.”

The Longoria family's endowment specifically focuses on supporting children battling cancer. Hadley Trull, Associate Director of Child Life at the hospital, expressed gratitude for the donation, emphasizing the importance of such contributions in providing mental health support for pediatric patients. Trull explained the role of Child Life services, stating, “Our team is specially trained to promote psycho-social and emotional support for pediatric patients.”

Trull further highlighted the significance of donations, mentioning, “We normally purchase these types of resources through philanthropic dollars, as we can’t bill for services, so these donations are vital to the work that we do.” She expressed her appreciation, saying, “The kids will keep all these things. I thank you so much!”

To continue supporting such initiatives, Deacon Leo Longoria extended an invitation to the first annual Campanario Banquet, a benefit dinner to raise funds for the Deacon Leo and Anita Longoria Family Endowment. The event will take place on Friday, May 10, at the Bishop Kicanas Pastoral Center Ballroom. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP by May 3 at www.cathfnd.org/longoria.

The Catholic Foundation’s ongoing efforts to support children at Diamond Children’s Medical Center through initiatives like Thankful Thursday demonstrate a commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of young patients in need.
