Dean Michael A. Simons and the entire Law School community are in mourning following the passing of Professor Elayne E. Greenberg, a revered figure at St. John’s Law. Professor Greenberg, who served as the Director of the Hugh L. Carey Center for Dispute Resolution, was remembered as an "irrepressibly positive force" who enriched both the institution and the legal profession as a whole.

Professor Greenberg, who joined St. John’s in 2007, was recognized for her unmatched experience in mediation and conflict management. According to Dean Simons, she taught the value and practice of conflict resolution, modeled community building, and produced outstanding scholarship in the field. Her impact extended beyond the classroom, with innovative programs such as the Bankruptcy Mediation Training Program and the Ghana Mediation Training Program.

Describing her as a noted scholar, the article highlights Professor Greenberg's interdisciplinary approach to exploring conflict etiology and her recent works on implicit bias and dispute resolution. She also shared her insights through a recurring column in the New York Dispute Resolution Lawyer and applied her scholarship connecting dispute resolution and social justice as a Fellow of the Vincentian Center for Church and Society.

Throughout her career, Professor Greenberg received numerous accolades and recognitions for her contributions to the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution. Her commitment to teaching and advising students was also emphasized, with her son, St. John’s Law alumnus Carey Alexander, noting that her students were a source of strength, purpose, and joy for her.

The St. John’s Law community will come together soon for a remembrance event to honor Professor Greenberg's legacy. In the meantime, reflections on her life and work are meant to bring comfort to those who mourn her passing. As the community pays tribute to her memory, may Professor Elayne E. Greenberg rest in peace, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and bless those who knew her.
