DePaul University has announced the Los Angeles Catholic Worker as the recipient of the 2024 Berrigan-McAlister Award. The award, established in 2021, recognizes individuals or organizations committed to Christian nonviolence, in the spirit of the Rev. Daniel Berrigan, S.J., Phillip Berrigan, and Elizabeth McAlister. The Los Angeles Catholic Worker, a part of the global Catholic Worker movement, has been selected for its dedication to serving the poor and advocating against various societal injustices.
In a statement, Michael L. Budde, chair of the Berrigan-McAlister Award committee at DePaul University, commended the Los Angeles Catholic Worker for their unwavering commitment to gospel nonviolence and prophetic witness. He highlighted the organization's persistent efforts in assisting marginalized communities and challenging oppressive structures both locally and internationally.
Jeff Dietrich, one of the co-founders of the Los Angeles Catholic Worker, will accept the award on behalf of the organization. Dietrich, who has dedicated over five decades to supporting marginalized populations in Southern California, is a renowned author and peace advocate. As part of the award ceremony scheduled for May 13, Dietrich will share insights into the vision and mission of the Los Angeles Catholic Worker.
The Berrigan-McAlister Award, originating at DePaul University, celebrates individuals or groups embodying active Christian nonviolence principles. Past recipients of the prestigious award include the Kings Bay Plowshares 7, Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation, and Elizabeth Kanini Kimau.
