On April 4, 2024, Rob Kissner, GaelVentures Program Manager at Iona University, emphasized the importance of viewing AI as a valuable tool in supporting students' educational journeys rather than a means of cheating. Kissner highlighted the need for educators to adapt to the evolving landscape of technology in education.

At The Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, AI has been embraced as a valuable asset in education for several years. Kissner mentioned the university's proactive approach to incorporating AI into courses and fostering discussions to explore the ethical use of AI in various professional settings.

Collaborating with Dr. Liqian Bao and Dr. Mehedi Hasan on a pilot course titled “AI in a Professional Setting,” Kissner discussed the importance of preparing students for a workforce where understanding and utilizing generative AI ethically is crucial. The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the evolving technological landscape in their careers.

Kissner underscored the significance of students being proficient in using AI tools and having a mindset open to experimenting with new technologies. He emphasized that students who embrace these skills will have a competitive edge in future opportunities.

Reflecting on his experience teaching the course, Kissner shared insights into innovative ways of utilizing AI to enhance students' communication skills. By engaging students in prompt writing exercises with AI tools like Microsoft’s CoPilot, Kissner found that this approach not only improved communication but also fostered critical thinking and constructive feedback among students.

As an educator, Kissner recognized the importance of continuously evolving with technology to better support students and fellow faculty members at Iona University. By integrating AI into teaching practices, educators can empower students to leverage the potential of AI in their academic and professional endeavors.
