Tallahassee, Fla. – Unborn children who can feel pain will remain protected, and a law safeguarding babies with a heartbeat will come into effect on May 1 following the recent rulings from the Florida Supreme Court. The court's decision also addressed a proposed constitutional amendment related to all-trimester abortion that will be on Florida's ballot in November.

In response to these rulings, Katie Daniel, the State Policy Director of SBA Pro-Life America, stated, "Today’s victory for unborn children who have a heartbeat and can feel pain is in line with the views of the majority of Floridians who want to protect babies and serve mothers and families." Daniel emphasized the importance of Governor Ron DeSantis taking a leading role in defending these protections against attempts to eliminate the rights of unborn children and families.

Expressing concerns about the proposed constitutional amendment, Daniel highlighted the risks it poses, stating, "Not only will this measure bring dangerous late-term abortions back to Florida, but it will allow girls who aren’t old enough to get their ears pierced on their own get an abortion without a parent’s okay." She further added, "In a state where 25% of abortion centers failed inspections it’s no surprise they want to be completely unregulated to increase their profits at the expense of women, girls, and babies."

The Florida Supreme Court's decision also addressed Attorney General Ashley Moody's challenge of the measure, citing deceptive language and violation of the state's single-subject requirement. SBA Pro-Life America raised concerns about the deceptive use of the term "viability" in the amendment while permitting third-trimester abortions under certain conditions.

Furthermore, it was noted that the pro-abortion amendment, supported by organizations like the ACLU and Planned Parenthood, has significant financial backing from the abortion industry. Nearly one-third of the funds raised for the amendment originate from entities that stand to profit directly from expanded late-term abortions.

The implications of the proposed amendment are far-reaching, with concerns raised about the potential risks to women, girls, and unborn babies. SBA Pro-Life America, a network dedicated to advocating for pro-life legislation and electing leaders who support pro-life values, continues to voice opposition to measures that could endanger the lives of the most vulnerable.
